By 2020 it is estimated Premier League footballers will earn on average £5m a year1, excluding bonuses and commercial arrangements. A similar situation exists for other elite athletes. With a career in the Premier League lasting just 8 years on average2, a realistic investment programme is critical. Once players retire, or are forced to stop playing due to injury or contractual issues, their salary base immediately reduces – drastically altering their financial circumstances.
There is no shortage of multi-millionaire athletes who have played, earned well and fallen on hard times in a matter of years. In fact, three out of five players declare bankruptcy3 after retirement and therefore managing the earnings from a relatively short career is critically important. Retirement from top class sport, usually by your mid 30’s, is one of sport’s inevitabilities. However, normally less than 10 per cent of professional athletes prepare for this4.
In the same way team managers makes sure they employ the right people – sports psychologists, tacticians, physiotherapists – to make the squad successful, players should seek investment advice from experienced practitioners.
